Stone cold

One spring day, so many years ago

As the snow drops were coming up

And the countryside was showing the signs of spring

I was barely a child

When my mother

Took me down

And showed me the statues

In the centre of town

My father had been gone for some time in his study

And taken my mother’s smile with her

I was so young
Tugging at her coat
Trying to work out why she was so sad
And the huge statues,

They were so cold

So silent

My mother looked at me

And said

Look at them

So happy

And at peace

I looked up at her and said in my foolish way

They remind me of Dad

She didn’t say anything as the wind whipped through her hair

I didn’t realise then when said they were so at peace

I would oneday wish with all my heart that was me
